Abrasive minerals are heavy cargo, and for buyers the logistics layer quietly shapes 10–20% of the landed cost. The same tonne of white fused alumina can arrive cheaper or more expensive — and drier or wetter — depending on how it is bagged, how the container is loaded, which port it sails from, and which trade term you agreed. This guide breaks down the full chain from the factory floor to your discharge port, so you can plan packaging and freight with the supplier instead of discovering the options after the price is quoted.

The default for most international fused alumina shipments is the 1 MT FIBC bag: a container carries 21–27 tonnes with minimal packaging waste, and forklift movement at both ends. Choose 25 kg paper bags when your downstream customers are small workshops, when you are mixing several product grades in one order, or when your warehouse cannot handle big bags. Whichever option you pick, the bag should carry a PE (polyethylene) inner liner — this is the single most effective defense against moisture, which is the main enemy of bagged abrasive during ocean transit.

Two details that separate a clean arrival from a damage claim:

  • Stack discipline: FIBC bags are stacked in alternating rows, not pyramid-style, with the container’s tie-downs or dunnage used where required. A shifted load becomes a torn bag becomes wet product.
  • A dry, clean, odor-free container: check (or require the supplier to check) the container before loading. Fused alumina takes on odors and absorbs moisture from a leaking roof or damp floor — and once the bags are inside, you cannot inspect the container again until discharge.

For white fused alumina and alumina powders, ask for the bags to be tarped and the container sealed with desiccant indicators on high-humidity routes (Middle East summer, tropical discharge ports). It is a small line item in the cost sheet with a large effect on arrival condition.

Ports, Routes and Transit Times

Chinese fused alumina typically ships from northern ports — Lianyungang, Qingdao, and Tianjin are the common loading points, with the choice driven by the freight forwarder’s rates rather than product quality. Indicative transit times from these ports:

  • Southeast Asia: roughly 3–10 days
  • Middle East (Jebel Ali, Saudi ports): roughly 12–20 days
  • Europe (Rotterdam, Hamburg): roughly 28–35 days

Transit time sets your working-capital cycle. A buyer running just-in-time abrasive stock for a foundry should carry at least one transit cycle of safety stock, and seasonality matters: freight rates and container availability peak before major production seasons and around year-end, so booking 2–4 weeks ahead of a price window usually beats waiting.

  • Under FOB, you control the ship, the schedule, and the freight rate — usually better if you consolidate several suppliers into the same container.
  • Under CIF, the seller quotes one price to your port and handles booking; convenient for single-supplier orders, but confirm what level of insurance is included (minimum “Institute Cargo Clauses (C)” covers less than “All Risks (A)”) and who bears the cost if the bags are found wet at discharge.
  • Payment terms run in parallel: T/T (typically 30% deposit, 70% against copy of bill of lading) is the standard for established buyer–supplier relationships, while an irrevocable L/C is common for first deals or large orders.

Lead Times and Shipping Documents

Production lead time for standard grades of fused alumina is typically 15–25 days from order confirmation, depending on stock position and the grit distribution ordered. Add the inspection window (3–7 days if you use pre-shipment inspection) and transit, and a full cycle from signature to discharge is commonly 6–10 weeks.

The document set you should expect with every shipment:

  1. Commercial invoice — value, packaging breakdown, weight
  2. Packing list — container, bag count, net/gross weight
  3. Bill of lading (B/L) — the title document; confirm the consignee and notify parties before the vessel sails

Planning Checklist

  1. Decide packaging in the quotation stage — FIBC versus 25 kg bags changes the per-tonne price and your destination handling plan.
